Music and hoops.

A line from Drake’s ‘Thank me now‘ describes this post almost perfectly.

‘I swear music and sports are so synonymous, cos we wanna be them and they wanna be us.’Image

Basketball and hip-hop are alike. Both have some serious flows! When you think about it though, a lot of NBA players have rap albums. Not saying they were good (Champion, Ron Artest.). And then a lot of rappers like Drake, Chris Brown and Lil’ Bow wow all have game. Some bands like Public Enemy, Run DMC and others all have some sick beats that are really great to hoop with.

Like, the last day me and my friend Eoin we’re playing 1v1 and we had ‘He got game’ bumpin’ in the background.

I suppose what I want to say is that sometimes people take music for granted in relation to sports. Take Michael Phelps as an example. The guy uses music as therapy before a race to calm himself down, get rid of nerves and focus on his game.

Music is a great way to just focus on stuff or clear your head. Try it next time you’re nervous before something like a big game or a big occasion, it’ll clear your head (But, don’t do it for a test though, the last thing you want to do is clear your head.). As well as relaxing it can also hype you up or get you in a rhythm.

So find your song, or band and try it.

hip hop has and always will be a part of the basketball culture…the two are very much intertwined…when you think about basketball culture especially with regards to streetball and the origins of a lot of the game’s top players (who you mention in a post often come from underprivileged backgrounds) its on inner city basketball courts in tough neighborhoods where not only do great star basketball players come from but where great rappers come from as well…like i said, the two are inherently intertwined

on that note there is a book you need to get called “Heaven is a Playground” by Rick Telander

and second…check out the song “The Game” by Jurassic 5

keep up the good work on the blog buddy!
